Got a EOS Rebel G film camera with a 28-80mm lens with 3 different filters, bag and strap for 30 bucks last night. Immediately strapped the lens to my 20D that I picked up on the way home.
Hooray for my ~$100 DSLR set up (minus accessories of course).

But but I thought photography had to be expensive?

That's why Lumpy now needs to add a $5,000 lens to his $30 camera.

Awesome! I keep wanting to find a deal on a film body, just to play with it if nothing else.

Good deal. How does the lens work with the digital body? IIRC you can use it as a regular lens but it won't auto focus, correct?

My father has something similar with his Pentax. he bought some old lenses and he loves them, even without AF.

Some of the film SLR's used autofocus lenses before digital was brought out. This is the case here, the autofocus works with my new digital camera from this old film camera!
You can get some good deals on lenses by paying attention to the mount, EF or EF-S in my case.

Lumpy is selling the film camera and just keeping the lens and bag. Starting to add more lenses for the DSLR Lumpy could very well hit $5000 at some point.

Any EF lens that Canon has made will function with any of the EF ready cameras. (Rebels, xD, xxD, etc).
That 28-80 is an EF lens and should work just fine.

I'll probably be selling it on Ebay if you are interested.

Nope especially with micro 4/3 cameras coming down in price. You could get a mint condition used panasonic GX1 and a zoom lens for around $200.

Pentax is unique in that their lens mount hasn't changed since the 1970's. The lenses come in four basic varieties- full manual, manual focus with automatic aperture setting, autofocus with automatic aperture setting, and fully automated with no aperture ring. All will work on modern DSLR's to varying degrees, with the last two 100% compatible as if they were made for digital.
All but the last one are fully backwards compatible for their old 35mm cameras as well.

Congratulations! I just spent 1500 on a (barely) used 7D body with two lenses and all the accessories... It's so worth it to have a good DSLR rig on hand, but even more so if you can do it 'on the cheap'.

Too bad I already bought my Christmas gifts for myself this year :/

That is pretty good for a 7D and lenses! I don't really know what to shoot but I'm sure I will find something!

Living in northern Canada doesn't allow that to happen, but lots of other opportunitys

How far north are we talking?

Just Lethbridge now but was in Edmonton and such, you know, Canada stuff.

Haha, indeed, I'm up in Calgary currently. Apparently there are some nice car shows around here in the summer at least

There is a Cars and Coffee in Edmonton in the summer and a pretty good weekend in Lethbridge. I'm sure Calgary has a few, a few Calgary Oppo's there too!
Banff has a lot of nice cars in the summer too, not really a car show, but a lot of awesome rides.

Congratulations. I expect to see lots of pictures shortly. The bag looks like it's in good shape. That's a perfect way to start out in photography.

Too cheap to shell out 40 bucks for a CF card so waiting til the weekend for my cf to sd adapter to arrive. Excited to get out and snap some shots!

I bet you're excited. You've been looking for a camera set up for quite a while. CF cards aren't cheap, but neither are good SD cards.

Ya I am, really surprised how big the 20D is but not a big deal!
I agree but I already have a bunch of SD cards around from my cousin who does reclamation work and takes a lot of pictures so he has a lot cards laying around. All top of the line ones too!

Yeah, it's a little bigger than the T3i, and feels more solid too. That's where it's a good option for you since you already have a bunch of SD cards. I take it you have an SD card reader already too.

Pretty big but not a big deal, anything bigger than a mirrorless its not going to fit in a pocket anyway.
It is pretty good, think the 20D will only take 8GB max on the card size. Laptop has a SD card slot so that might be easier.
I look at pictures on Flickr or here and they look way better on my work computer than on my laptop. Looks like I need a monitor to look at pictures on! Or on my TV!

Even a mirrorless with more than a pancake type lens won't fit in a pocket.
Yeah, that's what the quick googling I just did said. I didn't know that when I bought my 20D, but the two CF cards I ordered happened to be 8GB cards because they were a decent price on Amazon.
A monitor would be nice. I have a tv available that I want to set up as a monitor for my laptop. You could get your laptop screen calibrated, but the device that's used isn't cheap.

Sweet, thanks! I'll have to check this stuff out. Just got here, so it's all new to me
